Stoma World Kenya
I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in October 2000, shortly after finishing college and looking forward to a bright future. Initially misdiagnosed with piles, I underwent a minor operation during which the surgeon noticed something unusual. A biopsy confirmed that I had Stage 2 colorectal cancer. I went through a second, major operation and woke up with a permanent stoma.
Back then, there were very few ostomates in Kenya. For nearly a decade, I lived in silence—battling stigma, emotional pain, and lack of access to quality ostomy supplies. The only bags I could find were makeshift polythene ones that barely lasted two hours.
My journey began to change when I met an oncology nurse at Aga Khan Hospital who encouraged me to start a support group. He introduced me to another ostomate, and together we formed a small support network that eventually grew into Stoma World Kenya.
Today, I proudly serve as the Vice Chairperson of Stoma World Kenya. My greatest passion is to see all ostomates live dignified, confident, and supported lives. No one should walk this journey alone—and through this organization, we are making sure they don't have to.
As a survivor of colorectal cancer and an ostomate for over 20 years, I bring firsthand experience to our mission of supporting the ostomate community in Kenya. My work has helped transform the lives of hundreds of ostomates, providing them with dignity, support, and access to quality care.
