Living with a stoma can be a challenging experience, affecting not just physical health but also emotional and psychological wellbeing. At Stoma World Kenya, we understand that having a supportive community is essential for ostomates to adjust to their new way of life, overcome stigma, and regain confidence. Our Psychosocial Support program is the cornerstone of our work, bringing together ostomates from across Kenya to share experiences, challenges, and solutions.
"When I first got my colostomy, I felt isolated and afraid. I didn't know how to manage it or if I could ever live a normal life again. Attending my first SWK support meeting changed everything. Seeing others living full, happy lives with their stomas gave me hope. Now I help new ostomates find that same hope." — Mary, SWK Member since 2015
Our regular support meetings are held at the Guru Nanak Ramgarhia Sikh Temple in Nairobi, providing a safe and welcoming space for ostomates of all ages—from children as young as 4 to seniors in their 80s. These gatherings are not just about discussing medical concerns; they're about building friendships, sharing coping strategies, and celebrating victories both big and small in the journey of living with a stoma.
Our psychosocial support program operates through several key initiatives:
Through these initiatives, we've helped hundreds of ostomates transition from isolation and uncertainty to confidence and community. The psychological benefits of connecting with others who truly understand the ostomy experience cannot be overstated.
Our psychosocial support program has demonstrated significant positive impacts on the lives of ostomates in Kenya:
Members report significant decreases in feelings of depression, anxiety, and isolation after joining our support community. Having a space to share fears and concerns with others who understand makes a profound difference.
Peer-to-peer learning about practical stoma care tips and techniques has helped many members master stoma management, leading to fewer complications and greater confidence in daily activities.
With support and encouragement from peers, many ostomates have returned to work, school, social activities, and family responsibilities that they initially thought impossible after ostomy surgery.
By creating a positive community of ostomates who support each other, we're working to combat the stigma and myths surrounding ostomies in Kenyan society, leading to greater acceptance and understanding.
Whether you're a new ostomate seeking guidance, someone who has lived with a stoma for years, or a family member wanting to better support your loved one, we welcome you to join our supportive community.
